At around 3:10 a.m. on 19 July 2024 an explosive drone struck central Tel Aviv, killing one person and wounding others in a neighbourhood near the US Embassy. The Houthis in Yemen claimed responsibility. Israel's military said it believed the drone was an upgraded Iranian Samad-3 that had flown from Yemen, and an Israeli military official said it was identified but penetrated Israel because of human error in operating the system.

What we know
Israel's emergency services said the body of a 50-year-old man was found in an apartment close to the explosion and four people were taken to hospital with slight shrapnel injuries; AP reported at least 10 wounded, citing local police. The blast blew out windows and damaged cars over a wide area. It was described as the first lethal Houthi attack in Israel.
Israeli police and emergency services reported the casualties, and the Israeli military described the drone type and its approach from Yemen. The drone type rests on an Israeli military assessment; Israeli media reported that fragments of a drone of a kind widely used by Iranian-backed groups were recovered, and the military had not determined whether it exploded in the air or struck a building.
What remains unknown
Whether the drone exploded in the air or hit a building, the exact number of injured (four slightly wounded in Reuters, at least 10 in AP), and the cause of the failure to sound alarms, which the military is investigating. The Houthis' claim of a new drone capable of bypassing defences was rebuffed by the Israeli military.
Operator attribution: Claimed by a party (not independently verified). The Houthi spokesperson claimed responsibility on X and said the strike used a new drone called Yafa. Israel's military said it believed the drone arrived from Yemen. Analysts and Western intelligence services have long accused Iran of arming the Houthis, which Tehran denies. [1][2]
