What we know
Two aid workers told Reuters that at least 56 people were killed and 30 wounded, many of them children, and said the local authorities confirmed the toll. The UN humanitarian office told AFP the attack caused scores of civilian casualties, and it said humanitarian partners suspended activities in northwest Tigray because of the ongoing threat of drone strikes.
The death toll comes from aid workers who asked not to be named and from the TPLF, a party to the conflict; the UN office's statement confirms civilian casualties but gives no figure. Aid workers described an air raid, and the drone description comes from the TPLF spokesman.
What remains unknown
The exact number of victims, the type of aircraft or weapon used, and the operator. The Ethiopian government, military and prime minister's office had not responded to requests for comment in the first reports.
Operator attribution: Suspected. The TPLF spokesman blamed the federal government's forces and called it a drone attack. Ethiopian federal authorities did not immediately comment on this strike and have denied targeting civilians during the conflict. The United States condemned the air raid, and the European Union cited the air attack in a statement without naming who carried it out. [1][2]
