Air strike on Dedebit camp for displaced people in Tigray kills dozens, aid workers say; TPLF calls it a drone attack
Current state
An air strike on a camp for displaced people in Dedebit, in northwest Tigray near the Eritrean border, late on Friday 7 January 2022 killed at least 56 people and wounded 30, according to aid workers and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF spokesman called it a drone attack by the federal government. The UN humanitarian office said the attack caused scores of civilian casualties, and aid agencies suspended operations in the area.

Two aid workers told Reuters that at least 56 people were killed and 30 wounded, many of them children, and said the local authorities confirmed the toll. The UN humanitarian office told AFP the attack caused scores of civilian casualties, and it said humanitarian partners suspended activities in northwest Tigray because of the ongoing threat of drone strikes.
The death toll comes from aid workers who asked not to be named and from the TPLF, a party to the conflict; the UN office's statement confirms civilian casualties but gives no figure. Aid workers described an air raid, and the drone description comes from the TPLF spokesman.
