Yara J hit off Romania; president says drones struck the ship
Current state
The Comoros-flagged Yara J reported a fire in Romanian territorial waters near Sulina on the evening of 14 October 2026. The next day Romanian President Nicușor Dan said aerial drones had hit it and the Wine Trader. The defence minister had said earlier that radar did not show a drone approaching the ship.

Romanian Coast Guard statements relayed by both outlets say the crew extinguished the fire and everyone aboard was safe.
Romania's president, whose country is not a party to the war, said on 15 October that two aerial drones hit the two ships near Sulina, as reported by Spotmedia; he gave no technical details. This conflicts with the defence minister's earlier statement, carried by Digi24, that radar had not shown a drone approaching the ship. Info Sud-Est had cited unnamed sources for a possible drone strike.

Not established
Who launched the drones, how the conflicting official statements are reconciled and the exact strike time are not established. The minister gives a radio alert at 20:23 EEST (UTC+03); ARSVOM gives its rescue request at 20:25. The map marker is a sea centroid, not the ship's position.
Not established. The president declined to say whether the attack was deliberate or whether Russia was behind it; a shipping-union assertion of an intentional attack is not an official or technical finding.

- Revision 3 (2026-10-15): Map reference moved to the sea area off Sulina and the Danube delta, where the sources place the ship; it had been set at the centre of the Black Sea. It is a sea-area reference, not the ship's position. Added to the series Black Sea shipping incidents, October 2026.
- Revision 2 (2026-10-15): Romania's president said on 15 October that the two ships attacked near Sulina were hit by aerial drones; drone involvement is now reported by an official source. No technical finding has been published.
