Incident archive

Early on Monday 12 October the Saudi-led coalition said it was tracking threats from drones and cruise missiles targeting the kingdom; Reuters reported that incoming drones and missiles were reported by the coalition, with no immediate news of whether they were intercepted. This followed strikes on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on 10 and 11 October that the cited reports describe as a missile strike and an unidentified projectile, not as drone attacks.

What we know

No impact from the drones reported on Monday 12 October is established in the cited sources.

Drones appear in this dossier only through the Saudi-led coalition's statements on Monday 12 October, as reported by Arab News and Reuters. Both relay the coalition, a party to the conflict, so they are not independent confirmations. The earlier airport strikes are not drone incidents in the cited sources: Reuters describes Saturday's deadly strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport as a missile strike, and GACA said an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 on Sunday, killing a Pakistani national and injuring 11. GACA also said Dammam's King Fahd International Airport was targeted on Sunday evening, without naming the weapon. Those strikes are context only and are not attributed to drones here.

What remains unknown

Where the reported drones were heading, how many there were, whether any were intercepted or reached a target, and who launched them are not established in the cited sources.

Operator attribution: Not established. The cited reports do not say who launched the drones reported on Monday; they describe the alerts in the context of the Houthi campaign against Saudi Arabia. The Houthis claimed Saturday's airport attack, which the cited sources do not attribute to drones.

How to read a dossier

Every incident is judged on three separate questions. An airport can be confirmed closed while it is still unclear whether a drone was involved at all.

Was there a drone?

Drone presence: reported by a source, confirmed by explicit evidence, inconclusive after investigation, or debunked.

ConfirmedReportedInconclusiveDebunked

What was the impact?

Closures, diversions, damage or injuries, with their own evidence state. “Not established” means no source reports an impact.

ConfirmedReportedNot established

Who is responsible?

Attribution is never inferred. A party’s claim, a charge and a court finding are shown as different things.
