The Turkish-owned grain ship Royad Mammadov caught fire and sank in Romania's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea on 5 October 2026; two people were killed and 11 rescued. Ukraine's president said two Russian drones struck the ship; Romanian authorities did not identify a cause.

Drones involved

The cited sources do not name the type of drone.

What we know

Two crew members were killed and 11 were rescued by Romanian vessels and helicopters; three injured sailors were airlifted to Constanța. Euronews reported one crew member missing. The ship, flagged in St Kitts and Nevis, had left Izmail in Ukraine's Odesa region bound for Ravenna, Italy, according to Euronews.

Drone involvement is so far a claim: by Ukraine's president, whose country is a party to the war, and by the head of a Romanian seafarers' union, who said aerial and sea drones were used. Romania's interior ministry reported the fire and the rescue but did not state a cause. Reported by Al Jazeera and Euronews.

What remains unknown

Romanian authorities have not confirmed that drones caused the fire, and who launched them is not independently established. The exact position (Euronews: about 9 nautical miles from the Pescăruș platform, some 20 miles off the coast) and the number of missing crew differ between reports.

Operator attribution: Suspected. Suspected, not established: Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky attributed the attack to two Russian drones; this has not been independently established. The cited sources contain no Russian statement, and Romanian authorities did not name a suspect. [1][2]

How to read a dossier

Every incident is judged on three separate questions. An airport can be confirmed closed while it is still unclear whether a drone was involved at all.

Was there a drone?

Drone presence: reported by a source, confirmed by explicit evidence, inconclusive after investigation, or debunked.

ConfirmedReportedInconclusiveDebunked

What was the impact?

Closures, diversions, damage or injuries, with their own evidence state. “Not established” means no source reports an impact.

ConfirmedReportedNot established

Who is responsible?

Attribution is never inferred. A party’s claim, a charge and a court finding are shown as different things.
