Overnight on 9 to 10 September 2025, drones entered Polish airspace during a Russian wave of strikes on Ukraine. Poland's prime minister told parliament that 19 violations were recorded over seven hours. Polish and Dutch aircraft, supported by other NATO assets, shot down some of the drones. Poland called it an act of aggression and consulted allies under Article 4 of the NATO treaty.

Drone Poland's prime minister told parliament that 19 airspace violations were recorded over seven hours. Source passage [1] “Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament 19 violations were recorded over seven hours, but that information was still being gathered.” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	Prime Minister of Poland via Associated Press via PBS NewsHour	supports Preliminary official figure, described as not final; the Arms Control Association later cites 21 drones.
Drone A NATO spokesman said it was the first time NATO planes had engaged potential threats in allied airspace. Source passage [1] “the first time NATO planes have engaged potential threats in Allied airspace” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	NATO spokesman via Associated Press via PBS NewsHour	supports Confirmation of an allied engagement by NATO itself, not only by Poland.
Impact The mayor of Wyryki said a house was hit and much of its roof ripped off, with nobody hurt. Source passage [1] “told TVP Info that a house was hit. Much of the roof was ripped off. He said people were inside but nobody was hurt.” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	Mayor of Wyryki village via Associated Press via PBS NewsHour	supports Local official. The Arms Control Association says falling debris, likely from a NATO interceptor, damaged the house.
Attribution The Arms Control Association says debris analysis by media outlets and Polish authorities confirms the aircraft are of Russian origin, likely Gerbera-type drones. Source passage [2] “visual analysis of debris by multiple media outlets and Polish authorities confirm the aircraft are of Russian origin, likely Gerbera-type drones that can be equipped either as decoys or with explosive charges” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	Arms Control Association	supports Independent summary of origin. Origin is not the same as intent, which remains disputed.
Attribution Russia's Defense Ministry said it did not target Poland; Belarus said some drones lost their course because they were jammed. Source passage [1] “Russia's Defense Ministry said it did not target Poland, but close ally, Belarus, said it tracked some drones that "lost their course" because they were jammed.” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	Russian Defense Ministry and Belarus via Associated Press via PBS NewsHour	contradicts A denial of intent by parties with an interest in the outcome; it does not dispute Russian origin of the drones.
Attribution The EU's foreign policy chief said indications suggest the airspace violation was intentional, not accidental. Source passage [1] “Last night in Poland we saw the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began, and indications suggest it was intentional, not accidental.” Passage checked word for word against the source on 12 Oct 2026.	EU foreign policy chief via Associated Press via PBS NewsHour	supports Assessment by an EU official; it indicates intent but is not itself evidence of it.

Drones involved

As named by the source	Type	Number	Unit cost (published estimate)	Illustrative multiplication
Gerbera-type drones (likely) [2]	Gerbera	not given	$10k per aircraft (reported, 2025)	not computed

Illustrative multiplication: a reported count × a published third-party unit-cost estimate from our drone catalogue, one claim at a time. It is not an estimate of the cost of the attack, of materiel lost or of damage, and rows are never added up: they can describe the same drones (launched, intercepted, impacted) or come from different claimants. 'Intercepted' does not necessarily mean destroyed. The linkage and arithmetic are DroneLedger's; the unit-cost figures carry wide uncertainty. No multiplication is shown when the type, the count or a sufficiently specific per-aircraft price is missing. Drone types →

What we know

Part of Poland's airspace was closed for several hours and Warsaw's Chopin Airport suspended flights. A house in the village of Wyryki in the Lublin region was damaged and its roof largely torn off; the people inside were not hurt. Drones were found at seven locations, and objects of unknown origin at an eighth.

Polish authorities recorded the violations and recovered drones at multiple sites, and a NATO spokesman said NATO planes engaged potential threats in allied airspace. Figures differ between sources: 19 violations over seven hours according to the prime minister on 10 September, and 21 drones detected with at least three shot down in the Arms Control Association's later summary.

What remains unknown

Whether the incursion was intentional. Russia's Defense Ministry said it did not target Poland, and Belarus said it tracked drones that lost their course after jamming, while several European leaders said it appeared intentional. The exact number of drones and of those shot down is not settled, and the cause of the damage to the house (drone debris or an interceptor) is described differently.

Operator attribution: Suspected. Polish authorities and NATO officials treated the drones as Russian, and the Arms Control Association reports that debris analysis by multiple media outlets and Polish authorities indicates Russian origin, likely Gerbera-type drones. A joint statement by the foreign ministers of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine on 12 September accused Russia of a deliberate and coordinated strike. Russia denied targeting Poland, so responsibility for sending the drones into Polish airspace, and intent, remain disputed; recorded here as suspected. [1][2]

How to read a dossier

Every incident is judged on three separate questions. An airport can be confirmed closed while it is still unclear whether a drone was involved at all.

Was there a drone?

Drone presence: reported by a source, confirmed by explicit evidence, inconclusive after investigation, or debunked.

ConfirmedReportedInconclusiveDebunked

What was the impact?

Closures, diversions, damage or injuries, with their own evidence state. “Not established” means no source reports an impact.

Who is responsible?

Attribution is never inferred. A party’s claim, a charge and a court finding are shown as different things.
